Gann Academy–The New Jewish High School of Greater Boston is a pluralistic day school committed to providing a
challenging, nurturing, and inspiring education that integrates intensive
Jewish studies with the sciences and the humanities. It was founded on
the conviction that Jewish day school education during the adolescent years
is crucial for developing Jews who will be knowledgeable, sophisticated,
and passionate about Judaism and who will make lasting contributions to the
Jewish community, American society, and the world at large.
Our school is devoted to three basic goals:
The Study of Torah and General Culture
Gann Academy strives to develop young men and women for whom learning Torah
and studying general culture is central to their identities. Our outstanding
faculty teaches a rigorous dual curriculum in an environment where questions
are as important as answers and the growth of each student is paramount. We
challenge our students to cultivate their talents and interests in all areas
of human potential: intellectual, artistic, spiritual, and physical.
Interdisciplinary study, experiential learning, and the art of disciplined
conversation are key elements of our educational philosophy. Through
encouragement and by example, students learn to be potent generators of an
enlightened and inspired culture.
A Sacred Community Within the Jewish People
Gann Academy forms a diverse and pluralistic community. Our diversity is a
strength. An atmosphere of mutual respect provides a welcome forum for grappling
with fundamental religious questions and strengthening individual Jewish
identities. Our school nurtures a Jewish community characterized by a shared
tradition, a common dedication to social justice, and a love for learning.
In this way, we instill our students with a deep and abiding love for God,
Israel and the Jewish people. The creation of the State of Israel is one of
the seminal events in Jewish history. Recognizing the significance of the
State and its national institutions, we seek to instill in our students an
attachment to the State of Israel and its people as well as a sense of
responsibility for their welfare.
The Fulfillment of Commandments and the Mending of the World
Gann Academy challenges our students to understand and interpret Judaism as a
source of religious obligation, spiritual opportunity, and joyous celebration.
School life is enriched with Jewish experiential learning, tefilah (prayer)
and Shabbat and Holiday celebrations. Our awareness of having been created
in the image of God dictates that kavod habriyot (respect for living beings),
derekh eretz (ethical conduct) and midot penimiot (inner qualities)
permeate our school culture. We believe in the imperative of gemilut hasadim
(acts of lovingkindness) and the demand of tikkun olam (to improve the world
in which we live). As an outgrowth of these values, we consciously connect
midrash and ma’aseh (intellectual creativity and responsible action)
throughout our educational process.
